A few years ago, I kept seeing Easter Resurrection Gardens floating around social media. I thought they were adorable and a perfect reminder for why we as Christians celebrate Resurrection Sunday. These make wonderful activities for children, can teach Bible, life skills, and is a great bonding activity.

What is a Resurrection Garden?

An Easter resurrection garden is a symbol of Jesus rising from his tomb. They portray the scene that Mary Magdalene saw in John 20, a tomb with a stone to be rolled away on Resurrection Sunday.

Gather Your Supplies

Start With Your Soil

Start by adding soil (or dirt) to the pie plate. Then, add your pot to be the tomb. Next, put dirt around and on top of the tomb.

Make Your Crosses and Add Your Grass Seed

Use rope or twine to attach two twigs together to make a cross. You can make one of the crosses for Jesus a little bigger. Press them in the dirt above the tomb. Next, sprinkle on the grass seed.

Decorate and Water Your Resurrection Garden

You can be as creative with part as you’d like. We added our big rocks, as well as smaller rocks. Then, use a spray bottle to water the grass seeds.

Watch It Grow

You will want to set your Resurrection Garden in a sunny place. We left ours in the middle of our kitchen table. Make sure to water it daily. It will take a few days to start growing. It takes about a week for it to be complete. This makes an adorable centerpiece and a good reminder of what Resurrection Sunday is all about!

The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross

When we made our Resurrection Garden, we read The Garden, the Curtain, and the Cross. This beautiful Bible storybook takes children on a journey from the Garden of Eden to God’s perfect new creation. It is a gospel presentation that focuses on the significance of the temple curtain. God said “because of your sin you can’t come in”, but the moment the curtain tore in two, everything changed.
