Fostering a Love of Learning: A Kindergarten Homeschool Curriculum Guide

I absolutely love the kindergarten homeschool year. Kindergarten is an adjustment year, for most children and parents. The biggest issue I struggled with and I see many new homeschool parents struggle with, it doing too much too soon. Today, I want to share our favorite homeschool curriculum for kindergarten. These are resources I have used for multiple children and have thoroughly enjoyed.

Creating Engaging Learning Environments at Home: Kindergarten Curriculum Ideas

While you certainly don’t need a full, boxed curriculum, I have found this tends to be easier, especially with new homeschooling parents. I love the ability to know exactly what needs to be done everyday, although, I no longer feel tied down if we don’t. Here are my favorite curriculums that are a bit, all-in-one.

My Father’s World

My Father’s World was the very first curriculum we ever used when my son entered kindergarten. I love it’s strong emphasis on Bible memory and verses. The bible is woven throughout this curriculum. I also love that it is very literature heavy. You have several beautiful living books you are introducing on a weekly basis. It is also gentle. You feel like you’re doing enough, but not too much. It is very hands-on and interactive, which was perfect for my little guy. It is also 4 days a week, which is more than enough for a young child.

Five in a Row

Five in a Row is wonderful because it offers many different activities for the same book. It also has a strong emphasis on living books and beautiful literature. We have never used this as our full time curriculum in kindergarten, but we have definitely supplemented with it during holidays and breaks. My children love the hands-on activities and books.

Developing Essential Skills: A Kindergarten Curriculum for Hands-on Homeschooling

With my second kindergarten child, I decided to try piecing together my own curriculum. I used a more eclectic approach to my decision making.

All About Reading

We absolutely love All About Reading. You can see more about why we love it in this post. It was the only reading curriculum that really clicked for my oldest son, after several others. I didn’t think I’d use it for my second, but he really enjoyed the games and hands-on activities.

Sing, Spell, Read, and Write

Before my second son started using All About Reading, we tried Sing, Spell, Read, and Write. While I didn’t love it’s approach to reading as much as I thought I would, I still loved the hands on activities, handwriting practice, and songs that helped children learn their letter sounds and vowels. Honestly, if I didn’t plan on using MFW Kindergarten with my third child, I’d probably use a combination of SSRW with All About Reading. I would also highly recommend you look into a used copy of this program. It can be pricey.

Math with Confidence

I absolutely love Math with Confidence, especially for grades K-2. It is such a strong and solid foundation. This curriculum is also extremely affordable and very hands-on. It is a nice mix of mastery and spiral, which we prefer. The creator is a math major from Harvard. Once your children get older, we also like the Math that Sticks series. I got my three-year-old the Preschool Math at Home, but we have not started that yet.

Handwriting without Tears

While many of the curricula I have mentioned in this post contains handwriting, if you need a handwriting curriculum on it’s own, my younger son enjoyed Handwriting without Tears. We only used one book, but I know it is a popular choice for handwriting and we enjoyed it the year we used it.

Early Exploration: Integrating Science and History in Kindergarten to Spark Curiosity

While I don’t typically advocate for a science or history curriculum until around third grade, I know some states require it, so I want to share a few gentle programs that we have enjoyed in older grades. My children learn science and social studies mainly through books, videos, and the world around them at these primary ages. Nature studies, walks, field trips, museums, science experiments and literature are great ways to expose children to these topics without having a set curriculum.

Simple Studies

Simple Studies is just as the name implies. It is a Charlotte Mason inspired curriculum. It utilizes quality living books, notebooking, video links, poetry, Bible memorization, copywork, and review. I love that it can easily be adapted for older or younger students. We have especially enjoyed their science and history studies.

Rabbit Trails Homeschool

Rabbit Trails Homeschool is another literature based curriculum we have enjoyed for science and history. You will have discussions about the lessons and books, copywork, hands-on activities, poetry, and vocabulary. This is a curriculum designed for elementary students. It is easily adaptable to a kindergartener or middle schooler.

Encouraging Creativity and Exploration in Homeschool Kindergarten

While I have certainly given many curriculum options to research, if there is one thing I have learned in 10+ years homeschool, it is do not focus on academics solely, especially in the younger years. Give your children plenty of time outside in nature, with hands-on and open-ended toys, quality books, board games, adventures, social opportunities, and learning to manage emotions. Focus on fine and gross motor skills before ever expecting them to hold a pencil. If you do all this and some reading, writing, and math practice, I promise, you will have a great homeschool kindergarten year!
