Incorporating Copywork into Holiday School Fun
One way we incorporate writing skills into our homeschool curriculum is copywork. These 4 levels of free Valentine’s Day copywork have been on my TeachersPayTeachers store for a few years. I made them since I couldn’t find any way to incorporate copywork into our Valentine’s school.
What is copywork?
Copywork is when students copy out passages from books or other sources by hand in their best handwriting.
This method of teaching has been around for centuries and it’s becoming popular today in many homeschooling families, especially those who enjoy a Charlotte Mason inspired homeschool style.
Why is copywork beneficial?
- Improves grammar and vocabulary
- Improves handwriting
- Improves their understanding of sentence structure
- Learn how punctuation is used naturally
- Teaches children to read and write with greater accuracy
- Exposes children to many forms of writing styles and authors
- Improves children’s desire to want to read
- Improves concentration skills
- Improves reading comprehension
- Improves memory
- Teaches self control
As you can see, copywork is extremely beneficial and easy to implement into your homeschool curriculum!
Does copywork improve spelling?
While copywork doesn’t teach spelling phonetically, like say All About Spelling, it certainly helps improve spelling. The more we read and write words, the more we are exposed to them. This, in time, helps with comprehension, fluency, and spelling.
