Crafting Engaging Notebooking Activities for President’s Day

Notebooking is a crucial part of our homeschool education. I don’t think my children learn better than through engaging literature, hands-on projects, and narration. It’s easy to hand a child a worksheet and ask them to find the answers. However; a child has to fully understand and grasp the material to be able to write what was read in their own words.

What is notebooking?

Notebooking is when a child writes and/or draws about what they’re is learning and puts these notes in a some sort of notebook or binder. We use ours to record narrations, copywork, sketches, maps, timelines, and drawings.

Why use notebooking in your homeschool?

There are many benefits to notebooking. We started notebooking when my son with ADHD struggled to be able to recall information he was reading, which is very common for children with this disorder. However, allowing him to think about the information and recall it in his own words, was much easier. Here are some other benefits of notebooking:

  • It’s simple and easy
  • It’s frugal
  • It provides creativity
  • It’s open-ended
  • It can be used for all ages and abilities
  • It provides review
  • It’s allows the student to create unique work
  • It fosters cognitive learning
  • It can be used for any subject, topic, book, etc
  • It can inspire and encourage writing
  • It’s fun and engaging
